Police: Man shoots himself following traffic stop in Henderson

HENDERSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Henderson police said a man is dead after shooting himself after fleeing from police.

The incident began just after 1:30 p.m. Friday during a traffic stop in the area Winder and Harriet Streets.

An officer was confronted by the driver who produced a handgun and fired at the officer. The officer was not struck and was able to return fire.

The suspect then fled the scene in his vehicle.

A second Henderson officer who was in the vicinity then pursued the vehicle, which ended on Boothe Avenue.

Police said the suspect exited the vehicle and began running, with the officer chasing him. When the officer confronted the suspect, who was still armed with a handgun, on Bullock Street, the suspect shot himself.

The suspect was taken to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.

The names of the man who died and the officers involved have not yet been released.

The SBI is investigating.
