Gov. Cooper announces new affordable housing project in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- On Tuesday, Gov. Roy Cooper visited Fayetteville to make an announcement on affordable housing.

Gov. Cooper said that Oakridge Estates will receive state funding to add an affordable housing option for those who need it.

The Oakridge Estates will house 47 families on 14.2 acres. The new houses being built mark a partnership between Fayetteville Area Habitat and the City of Fayetteville.

Habitat for Humanity faced some difficulties when construction for the estates was put on hold over the summer after the organization didn't get the Community Block Grant funding they were hoping for, but Tuesday, Governor Cooper came with good news.

"We were able to work out an arrangement with funds appropriated by the N.C. General Assembly to help initiate this process," said Cooper. "I think it serves as a good model for affordable housing across the state because we know that this isn't just an issue for areas hit by hurricanes Florence and Matthew but all over our state."

Cooper said most of the new homes will go to families who are Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence survivors.
