2 teens ejected from SUV in Johnston County crash, unlicensed 18-year-old sister charged

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Johnston County teenager is fighting for his life and his big sister is charged with reckless driving after a crash that also injured their other sibling.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the 18-year-old driver didn't have a license.

The crash happened Tuesday night on Short Journey Road.

Troopers said Nimcy Chavez, 18, lost control of a GMC Yukon when she took a turn going too fast. She overcorrected and then ran off the other side of the road. The Yukon rolled over multiple times, ejecting the younger teens, who were not wearing seatbelts.

Chavez's 13-year-old brother was in the front passenger seat. He is currently in critical condition at WakeMed. Their 14-year-old sister has been released from the hospital is expected to be OK.

"If they were restrained properly within the vehicle I do believe their injuries would have been way less severe and they probably could have walked away from this wreck," said Trooper Chris Best.

Fortunately, EMS technicians were just a few hundred yards away when the crash happened and were able to respond quickly.
