SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- An officer with the Smithfield Police Department was dragged by a vehicle when a suspect tried to flee from a checkpoint.

It happened Thursday night around 10:30 p.m. when Smithfield officers were conducting a DWI checkpoint on Buffalo Road near Bookerdairy Road.

Officers stopped a car driven by Decarise Montreal Holder, 22, because Holder showed signs of intoxication. Officer Brian Sittig was attempting to remove Holder from his vehicle when Holder drove off, dragging Sittig with him.

Holder led police on a chase through Smithfield and into Selma, where he eventually lost control and struck multiple parked cars in a used car lot. Holder was taken into custody without injuries.

Sittig was taken to the Johnston Medical Center for his injuries, but has since been released.

Holder is facing numerous charges, including assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle) on a government official, assault on a law enforcement officer, DWI, and possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana.

Holder is being held at the Johnston County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond.
