Fake sheriff's deputy takes gun from driver in Hope Mills
HOPE MILLS, NC (WTVD) -- The Hope Mills Police Department and Cumberland County Sheriff's Office are investigating after a fake deputy took a gun from a driver.
Investigators said it happened the afternoon of August 12 on Golfview Drive near Rockfish Road.
A man said he was stopped "for speeding" by an unmarked Ford Crown Victoria with flashing blue lights in the grill.
A man in the car approached the driver with a sheriff's star badge on his belt. The fake officer spotted a handgun on the dashboard of the man's car and told him he was taking it because the driver had committed "a weapons violation."
The fake cop then got back in the Crown Victoria and drove off.
The driver realized the officer was a fake when he contacted the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office about the incident.
The bogus deputy is described as a black male in his mid-thirties, five foot eleven inches tall, about 200 pounds, short hair and clean shaven.
Authorities say anyone who finds themselves being pulled over by a medium gray unmarked Crown Victoria with blue lights in the grill should reduce their speed and proceed to a well-lit populated area before stopping.
