Stop Summer Hunger needs donations

RALEIGH (WTVD) -- ABC11 Together highlights community needs and how our viewers can help, and one area food bank is reaching out to help children in need.

When school is out for the summer children can't count on the cafeteria for a meal, that's why the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina created their Stop Summer Hunger campaign.

Food Bank coordinator Jennifer Caslin said the need for donations escalates during summer vacation.

"Unfortunately, in our 34 county service area we have about 300,000 children who receive free and reduced meals at school," Caslin explained. "We see a lot of kids in the summer who come through our Kid's Summer Meals programs and they're eating extra meals because they're afraid that they're not going to get anything that night."

Every dollar donated to the campaign buys 10 meals for families and right now the food bank is 200,0000 meals short of their 3.2 million goal by July 31.

Your donation now also goes a little further because money donations are being matched dollar for dollar until Friday.

"A small donation can be really life changing for somebody," Caslin emphasized. "A $5 donation is going to provide 50 meals right now and that's huge."

Food donations can also be made at any of the food bank's branches.
