MoneySaver: Durham thrift store funds crisis response center
DURHAM (WTVD) -- "Shop To Stop Domestic Violence" that's the slogan of Pennies For Change, an upscale thrift store in Durham selling donated items from clothing to housewares.
"We are the revenue producing arm for the Durham Crisis Response Center," explained Karen Anderson, who has worked at Pennies For Change for the past five years.
"All the money we earn here goes directly to Durham Crisis Response, which is domestic violence and sexual assault services. We try to set ourselves apart as a thrift boutique by putting out really the nicest things. We really try to cover a wide range of peoples needs. From the $4 item to maybe a $25 item," she said.
"We have books, jewelry, handbags, shoes things for the home -- items for the home," said Anderson. "And, we do not deal with kids' clothes or men's clothes."
But, they do deal with some big brands.
"We get wonderful brands, we have tons of Chicos, Talbots, St. John's Bay," she said. "We get very, very nice clothing. Sweaters are $5, blouses are $4, jeans are $4. So, anybody can come in here and find an outfit for $12."
Clothing on the floor is seasonal, and when the season changes, there is always a best of the best sale where shoppers can buy a ticket to be first in line to get first pick of the best items employees have set aside.
"It's a fundraiser for us," she said. "So, we sell tickets for that event, which are $10 and $12. People can come in and really see the pick of the pick of all the different clothes, and then for weeks after that the spring clothes will be on the racks."
The next Best Of The Best Sale will be held on Sunday, March 8 at Pennies for Change.
