The chase began in Sampson County about 8:10 p.m. when deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on US 13 near Wrench Road of a vehicle driving erratically and very close to a tractor-trailer.

The driver refused to stop and fled traveling through Newton Grove where he turned onto US 701 and then I-40 west toward Johnston County.
Deputies said the driver was driving at speeds up to 100 mph. The Highway Patrol started a rolling roadblock to bring the suspect's vehicle to a stop on I-40 between South Saunders Road and Lake Wheeler Road at Exit 297.

The driver, Drew Smith, 32, of Jacksonville, North Carolina was charged with following too closely, speeding, driving left of center, flee to elude arrest in a motor vehicle, driving while license revoked, and reckless driving.

As a result of the pursuit, the vehicle was seized under the North Carolina "Run and Done" law and impounded.
Smith was given a $10,000 secured bond.
