Dr. Griffith was the acting dean of student affairs at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. That school is part of City University of New York.

"Derrick was a pillar in the community. He served the students of Medgar Evers and the greater community with passion and he will be sorely missed," said the school in a statement on its website.
