Student found dead near Appalachian State University

BOONE, N.C. (WTVD) -- Police have identified a man found dead near Appalachian State University's campus as a student.

He was identified as 18-year-old John Merriss.

Some other students, who admitted they had been drinking, brought the teen to the hospital on Friday morning after finding him near a dumpster.

The cause of death is still under investigation.
