Durham Police officer involved in shooting

DURHAM

Durham Police officers were working off-duty in uniform at the Carriage House Apartments on Seven Oaks Road when they were flagged down and told that a man had pointed a gun at several people, including two juveniles, ages 4 and 8.

The officers approached a man who had a firearm in his hand and ordered him several times to drop the gun. The man refused to drop the gun and approached the officers. One of the officers shot the man, identified as Willard Scott Jr., 22, in the leg.

Scott was treated at Duke University Hospital and then taken to the Durham County Magistrate's Office. Scott was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, four counts of assault by pointing a gun, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of marijuana with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver. Bond was set at $150,000.

The case is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation and the Police Department's Professional Standards Division, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
