Columnist's article sparks controversy in Durham

DURHAM

Since the Duke Lacrosse Case broke, tension between Duke University and the city it calls home has been strained.

A new article written in The Chronicle threatens to make things worse. Written by weekly columnist, Daniel Belzer, "The letter to D-town" starts out, "Dear armed Durham Resident."

The article reflects on the deadly armed robbery of Duke graduate student Abhijit Mahato.

It actually advices Durham residents who quote "have guns and bandana's" to focus on rich undergraduate students living in luxury apartments, instead of graduate students who according to Belzer, have less money.

In Durham, the column struck a nerve. The article goes on the say that most well-to-do Duke students are scared and wouldn't put up much of a fight.
