Gill kicks off UNC Children's Hospital fundraising

CHAPEL HILL "I try to do a lot of this because it blesses me in a way that to me is spiritual," said Gill. "To me, it's the whole point; it's the whole point of how you're supposed to be and what you're supposed to do."

Gill offered to give the concert and 100 percent of the proceeds after hearing Reece Holbrook's story through a mutual friend. At 2, Reece was diagnosed with leukemia.

"He's a trooper," said Chad Holbrook, Reece's father. "He's a warrior and he's an inspiration to his mom and his dad. I think as more people get to know him he's becoming more of an inspiration."

Reece is in remission, but, his courageous 3 year battle with cancer has inspired the entire UNC community. His father, Chad is UNC Chapel Hill's assistant baseball coach. His mom, Jennifer, is an assistant to Chapel Hill basketball coach Roy Williams. Three years ago, the universities coaches, players, and staff started the Reece Holbrook golf classic and special sports memorabilia auction. Over the years it's raised more than half a million dollars for the hospital.

"I'm not lucky I have a kid with cancer," said Chad Holbrook. "But, I am lucky I am at this hospital with these doctors.

Holbrook also feels lucky Vince Gill's concert kicked off the fundraising this year raising more than 71 thousand dollars.

"A bunch of kids and families are gonna benefit because of a couple of acts of kindness," said Gill. The kindness was sparked by little Reece Holbrook who's winning his battle with cancer which is the sweetest song of all.

The Reece Holbrook golf tournament is Monday, May 5th. The sports memorabilia auction will be Sunday, May 4th at 5pm at the Smith Center Practice Gym on UNC Chapel Hill's campus. The auction is open to the public.
