Two arrested for counterfeit checks

FAYETTEVILLE Mark Boutan, 45, and his alleged accomplice 25-year old Shanee Burtwell are accused of passing checks on a fictitious Waffle House account at a Hope Mills pawn shop.

Deputies suspect there may be others who unknowingly accepted counterfeit payroll checks from Waffle House over the Memorial Day weekend. Those persons are urged to contact the Cumberland County Property Crimes Unit at (910) 677-5455.

Boutan has been charged with felony possession of counterfeit instruments, forgery and uttering and obtaining property by false pretense. He was released from the Cumberland County Detention Center after posting a $2000 bond.

Burtwell is charged with two counts of felony forgery and uttering, two counts obtaining property by false pretense, injury to personal property, second degree trespassing and felony conspiracy. She was released from the Cumberland County Detention Center after posting a $2500 bond.

Both suspects are expected to make a first court appearance Tuesday.
