New Durham city manager named

DURHAM, NC Durham Mayor Bill Bell tells Eyewitness News the Durham City Council will be meeting in a closed session at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon to discuss the hiring of the city's next city manager.

Eyewitness News has confirmed that Tom Bonfield, the city manager in Pensacola, FL, will replace Patrick Baker as Durham's city manager.

It is not clear whether Bonfield will be formally introduced Tuesday.

Bonfield was appointed Pensacola City Manager in November 1998. He's a native of St. Petersburg, Florida and holds a Bachelor's Degree in accounting from St. Leo University in St. Leo, Florida, and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of South Florida.

Bonfield will succeed current City Manager Patrick Baker who is going to go back to his old job as city attorney. This is Durham's third time searching for a city manager in just four years.

Bonfield was not one of the three candidates the city council introduced to Durham residents in April. After the public forum involving those candidates, city leaders said they would continue to look at other candidates.
