The Cumberland County Department of Social Services is offering a measure of relief to people who have no other way to escape the oppressive heat. The DSS offices, both at the DSS campus on Ramsey Street and at 103 Lake Tree Boulevard in Spring Lake, will open an auxiliary lobby starting Wednesday, and any day this summer that the heat index is expected to rise to the equivalent of more than 100 degrees.

The heat index is comprised of temperature and humidity readings. Reaching an index of 100 usually triggers a heat advisory.

The lobby areas will be open from 8 to 5, Monday through Friday, throughout the summer when a heat advisory is issued or the heat index reaches 100.
