Life for man who killed former NCSU student

RALEIGH

Twenty-six-year-old Joey Sanderlin was sentenced to life in prison without parole in a /*Wake County*/ courtroom. His co-defendant, Byron Waring, was placed on death row last year after a Wake County jury found him guilty of Redman's murder.

According to Wake County's district attorney, it was Sanderlin who raped Redman in her west Raleigh apartment. Both men allegedly stabbed her repeatedly in the abdomen. She was found by a neighbor outside her apartment. The neighbor and investigators described the bloody scene as one of the most gruesome they had ever seen.

Twenty-two-year-old Redman was found with her hands tied and her mouth bound with clear plastic packing tape. She was a former NC State student and Knightdale native who graduated from East Wake High School.

Friday morning's hearing was part of a plea deal that spared Sanderlin the death penalty but will keep him behind bars until he dies.
