Man charged with his mother's murder

SMITHFIELD, NC

Authorities arrested 42-year-old /*Tony Bynum*/ Wednesday night after they say he confessed to the killing.

Thursday Bynum made his first court appearance in front of family and friends. Just yesterday he comforted grieving family members outside of the home he shared with his mother, 69-year-old /*Annie Bynum*/.

She was found dead in the home, and police will not say how she was killed.

Family members say she failed to show up for her overnight shift at a treatment center. Workers called her sister, who went over the house, found a door open and called police.

Wednesday investigators towed a truck that she shared with her son from the home. After hours of investigating, they arrested Tony Bynum and charged him with murder.

Several family members were at Thursday's court appearance did not want to speak on camera, but they told reporters Tony Bynum has four children. All of the children are devastated they lost their grandmother and now their father.

Police haven't said what the motive was for the murder but family members say Tony lost his job at Wal-Mart Sunday. And the last thing the knew is Tony Bynum went out Tuesday for a night of drinking.

Tony Bynum is scheduled to appear in court again on October 23.
