UNC system scales back budget request

During tough financial times, the UNC system is scaling back its budget request to the North Carolina General Assembly.

The Board of Governors hopes to maintain the quality of the system rather than improve over the next two years.

Friday the Board approved sending a 2-year $3 billion budget to the N.C. Legislature for approval.

It's asking for $160 million more than last year, nearly a 6 percent increase.

Although that amount seems like a lot, the system usually asks for a 12 percent increase.

President Erskine Bowles says he doesn't expect the General Assembly to fully fund the request.
