The town of Cary announced Monday that it's the third safest in the nation amoung cities with population 100,000 to 499,999.That's according to CQ Press, publisher of the annual "City Crime Rankings 2008-2009: Crime in Metropolitan America."

Cary was fourth in the same category in 2007.

"Even though Cary continues to be the safest large community in North Carolina and one of the safest places in the nation, we never lose sight of the fact that each crime we do have forever impacts one of our family, friends, or neighbors," offered Chief Pat Bazemore in a statement released to the media.

When compared to cities of any size, Cary ranked 15th in the nation. By comparison, Raleigh came in at 173, Fayetteville at 292, and Charlotte at 324.
