He served a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Investigators have released few details of Irvin's death, but say it is considered a homicide.
Irwin's colleagues say he was a leader who they could always count on in any situation as well as a friend.
"Sgt. Irwin was a great leader and even better friend. When it came to work, he would set the example on how to be an [noncommissioned officer]," said Spc. Jonathan Lendved, one of Irvin's Soldiers. "He was a friend that will never be forgotten."
Irvin is survived by his wife and son.
