Paratrooper killed in shooting

Officials at Fort Bragg say an 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper died early Friday morning when he was shot at the Cambridge Arms Apartment complex off North McPherson Church Road.Sgt. Christopher Mark Lewis Irvin, 23, of Statesboro, Ga., was a Vehicle Maintenance Shop Foreman with the 508th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

He served a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Investigators have released few details of Irvin's death, but say it is considered a homicide.

Irwin's colleagues say he was a leader who they could always count on in any situation as well as a friend.

"Sgt. Irwin was a great leader and even better friend. When it came to work, he would set the example on how to be an [noncommissioned officer]," said Spc. Jonathan Lendved, one of Irvin's Soldiers. "He was a friend that will never be forgotten."

Irvin is survived by his wife and son.
