Bail set at $1 million in student murder

GASTONIA Neal Leon Cassada Jr. and Mark Bradley Carver were charged Friday with murder and conspiracy in the death of 20-year-old Irina "Ira" Yarmolenko.

Her body was found next to her car on the banks of the Catawba River a couple of hours after she left a university area coffee shop.

Cassada's lawyer says he suffers from mental problems, and he mumbled and behaved strangely during his court appearance Monday.

The Gaston County District Attorney's office says Carver also has psychiatric problems and is under medication for schizophrenia.

The judge ordered jail staff to check what medications both men take and make sure they get them.
