Murder victim laid to rest, crime unsolved

DURHAM Services for Trevor Spain were held at Union Baptist Church on North Roxboro Street. More than a thousand people came.

Family and friends - and even his fellow alumni from Durham High's class of 86 were there to remember the man they said was take charge - and always a sharp dresser.

Trevor was a spark plug with his humor, that quick wit, and that quick tongue, said friend Travis Sellers.

The 41-year-old was found dead in the basement of his house on Shepherd Street. There was no sign of forced entry, and several items were missing from the home.

Durham Police detectives have refused to say if they believe Spain knew his attacker, but they say it was not a random act of violence.

Spain's death left his neighbors worried about their own safety. Residents have reported several break-ins and other criminal activity in the area. Several neighborhood boards plan to hold meeting to talk about the problems and city officials say they'll attend.
