UNC Coach Hatchell gets 800th win

CHAPEL HILL

Hatchell is in her 23rd season at North Carolina and 34th as a college coach.

She has become the fourth coach to reach 800 wins, joining Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt and C. Vivian Stringer.

Hatchell led the Tar Heels to the national championship in 1994. She improved to 800-274, with 528 of those victories while at Chapel Hill.

Last year, UNC went 33-3 and won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament for the fourth straight season.

UNC recently offered Hatchell a four-year contract extension through 2015. Hatchell makes an average of $330,000 during the next seven years, plus supplemental income averaging more than $65,000 per year.

She was mentioned to fill the South Carolina vacancy before withdrawing from consideration in May, saying "North Carolina is my home."

The extension amends the six-year contract she signed in 2002. It was amended in 2006.
