Durham MLK parade names Grand Marshal

DURHAM The seventh annual event steps off at 12 noon on January 31 from Fayetteville Street. The theme is "Dreams Can Become Reality" to honor Dr. King and President Obama.

The parade committee announced Friday that Dr. E. Lavonia Allison will serve as Grand Marshal. Allison is Chair of the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People (DCABP).

"We are honored that Dr. Allison has accepted to serve as Grand Marshal this year. As the nation makes history so is the Parade by naming the first woman Grand Marshal. Dr. Allison has worked diligently to make a difference in the lives of Durham citizens through both her professional and community work. She epitomizes our theme; she believes that by working together, dreams can become reality," offered parade organizer Phyllis Coley.
