It amounts to a roughly 2.5 percent cut in the county's original $984 million budget. Most departments will be trimming their current budgets by roughly 4 percent, and many vacant jobs will not be filled.
No current jobs will be immediately lost.
Wake schools have trimmed $5.7 million from their budget.
County leaders say the much bigger challenge will be asking all departments to try and cut budgets by 10 percent next year, which will almost certainly lead to cuts.
