UNC system workers may face furloughs

CHAPEL HILL At least that's what UNC President Eskine Bowles is seeking.

Bowles wants legislation to furlough university employees in response to cuts in state appropriations.

A furlough, which is a temporary leave of absence, is sometimes involuntary because of work conditions.

The temporary layoffs would require approval of the UNC Board of Governors and legislators.

The UNC system is facing up to 7 percent of cuts in state funding.
