Plan would expand NC hiking

BOONE According to a published report in the Winston-Salem Journal, the High Country Council of Governments has tentatively mapped 389 miles of proposed trails.

The trail network would stretch across Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes counties. The plan, which is the work of more than 150 people, has been approved by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation.

The state is working with other regional councils to develop a statewide trail plan, including an interactive Web site that would show the trail network across North Carolina.
