Firefighter dispatched to wife's accident

WILMINGTON, NC A Pender County volunteer firefighter was the first to respond to a hit-and-run accident.

Upon his arrival, he discovered the victim was his wife, 30-year-old Amy Suzanne Kornegay. She was dead.

Police say she was walking Monday afternoon when she was struck by a pickup truck that left the scene.

The driver of the truck, 71-year-old Amon Hall, eventually returned to scene and said he thought he had hit a deer.

Kornegay was a substitute teacher and the mother of two sons.

Hall is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to file a report. He is in jail under a $10,000 bond.
