Yow's Hoops 4 Hope lives on

RALEIGH Hoops 4 Hope is a basketball game centers around a fundraising event for breast cancer research.

North Carolina State Women's Basketball Coach Kay Yow created the event four years ago to raise awareness for the disease that took her life on January 24 of the this year.

Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. Her unexpected death shocked the nation, though Yow had been on a leave of absence from her team since December due to extremely low energy.

This year's event was sold out, with NC State playing University of Virginia at Reynolds Coliseum. State beat Virginia 60-54 in an emotional game.

Virginia Head Coach Debbie Ryan was also diagnosed with cancer in 2000, but it is currently in remission.

Last year the event raised more than $42,000 to benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The Yow/WBCA fund is in partnership with The V Foundation, an organization named after former NC State men's basketball coach Jim Valvano, who died of cancer in 1993.
