Smithfield Foods announces plant closings, layoffs

Smithfield Foods announced it is closing one North Carolina factory and may layoff workers at another.The company is the world's largest hog processor.

Tuesday the company announced it will cut 1,800 jobs.

Smithfield also plans to close six factories as part of a restructuring plan, including a factory in Elon.

It is not know if workers at the company's Bladen County plant will lose their jobs.

Smithfield said the layoffs are part of the company's plans to consolidate and streamline its pork business. The plants will close by the end of the year.
