Former UNC president undergoes surgery

CHAPEL HILL The 88-year-old had his aortic valve replaced Tuesday at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hil after suffering a minor heart attack in December.

Dr. Brett Sheridan, associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine talked about Friday's surgery Wednesday.

"Dr. Friday had surgery Tuesday at the North Carolina Memorial Hospital to replace a hardened (stenotic) aortic valve, a common condition among patients requiring cardiac surgery," he said. "The surgery was successful and Dr. Friday is doing well. He is resting comfortably and has visited with family. We anticipate an uneventful recovering and a timely discharge in a few days."

Friday presided over the university system from 1956 to 1986.
