The Wake County Sheriff's office said Valdez-Masias shot June Carlyle at her home on Creech Road on Tuesday and then shot himself in the head. A mug shot showed extensive stitches across his scalp from the injury.
Detectives said the incident was a domestic dispute that escalated. They recovered a .380-caliber handgun at the scene of the shooting.
