Man escapes carjacker by jumping from trunk

DURHAM Police say the chase started shortly after 10 a.m. when an officer spotted a car that was reported stolen at gunpoint late Monday night. The officer said he attempted to stop the car near Dillard and Liberty streets, but the driver refused to stop.

Police chased the car for about three blocks before it hit a curb and the driver jumped out. Officers say they chased the suspect, 19-year-old Ivory Lotson, on foot for about a block before catching him.

The victim of the carjacking told police he got out of his car to throw away trash on Morgan Street around 11 p.m. Monday when a man approached him and demanded his wallet. The suspect took the man's wallet and forced him into the trunk of the Saturn.

The victim was able to open the trunk and jump out while the car was traveling on the Durham Freeway. He is being treated at Duke University Hospital for his injuries.

Lotson is charged with first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy, forgery, resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer, felony speeding to elude a law enforcement officer, careless and reckless driving and hit-and-run.
