Prosecutors want Jayson Williams jailed

NEWARK, N.J. New Jersey prosecutors want a judge to sentence 41-year-old Williams for covering up the 2002 shooting of a driver who worked for him.

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office filed the request Wednesday. Prosecutors cited Williams' arrest over the Memorial Day weekend in North Carolina on an assault charge as the reason to put Williams behind bars.

Raleigh police arrested Williams Sunday night after they say he was involved in an altercation at the Ugly Monkey bar on west Morgan Street. He was charged with one count of simple assault following a fight at the Ugly Monkey bar.

The former NBA star has been free on bail since the 2002 killing of Costas Christofi, despite being convicted in 2004 of covering up the slaying. Sentencing has been delayed pending Williams' retrial on a reckless manslaughter count.

Defense attorneys are seeking to overturn the cover-up conviction on grounds of racial bias.
