After years of advising fairgoers to wash their hands in order to protect humans from animal-borne illnesses, officials are issuing an advisory to protect livestock from getting sick. The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services issued the warning Tuesday. Fair patrons will need to wash their hands to prevent the spread of H1N1 to pigs.

If you are exhibiting any flu-like symptoms, you should avoid the fair and stay away from any animal exhibits.

Veterinary officials also recommend that fair managers add a 6-foot barrier around any swine exhibits to further separate humans from animals.
