Ballet dancer killed in high-speed crash

RALEIGH, NC Investigators told Eyewitness News Raymond Cook ran a red light and hit another car in north Raleigh on Strickland Road near Leadmine Road.

The driver of the other car, 20-year-old Elena Bright Shapiro, was rushed to the hospital, but later died.

Authorities said Cook was driving about 85 miles an hour in a 45 mph zone when he struck Shapiro's car.

Cook has been charged with death by motor vehicle, DWI, failure to reduce speed, careless and reckless driving.

According to WakeMed hospital's website, Cook is a facial reconstructive expert.

WakeMed has suspended Cook pending further investigations into the case.

WakeMed spokesperson Heather Monackey called the dancer's death an extremely tragic accident and said the thoughts and prayers of WakeMed's family are with Shapiro's family.
