2-year-old shot, killed

SANFORD Police told Eyewitness News the shooting happened at 11 a.m. Officers were dispatched to a duplex on Cannon Circle and discovered the child had been shot in the head in a back bedroom.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say it appears children got hold of an unsecured .40 caliber pistol and it went off - killing the child.

It's not clear if the child shot himself or if another child pulled the trigger. Two other children, the boy's 3-year-old sister and 4-year-old brother were also in the room at the time. Police say the other two children were not hurt.

"We don't know if the 2-year-old was playing with the gun when it went off, or the other children were playing with the weapon," Police Capt. David Smith said.

Authorities have not released the name of the child, but neighbors say his nickname was JoJo.

"From what I have seen, they were really good parents I know she loved her children," neighbor Jamie Turney said. "If you seen them you seen her she was always out here with them."

Police say Melonie Tyson was home at the time of the shooting. Investigators say she and her husband, Joey, will have to answer why the firearm was not secured.

Authorities say they plan to turn their findings over to the district attorney to decide what charges to file.
