NC soldier killed in Afghanistan

FORT BRAGG Pfc. Alan Newton, 26, was a US Army Reserve Civil Affairs soldier. He died on Oct 2 from injuries sustained in an attack near the village of Murcheh, Afghanistan.

A private viewing is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro, N.C. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Big Oak Church of God in Star, N.C. with internment immediately after.

Newton was a civil affairs specialist assigned to the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion (Tactical), Company A, stationed in Greensboro, N.C.

His military awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Bronze "M" Device, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Army Service Ribbon. Posthumous awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal, and the Combat Action Badge.
