Chapel Hill installs call boxes

CHAPEL HILL The streets around UNC Chapel Hill are a little safer thanks to the memory of slain student body president Eve Carson.

Three new emergency call boxes installed in neighborhoods near the UNC campus are up and running. They're at 407 Merritt Mill Road, the corner of Church and Short streets, and Mallette Street at Colony Court.

The university has numerous emergency call boxes on campus, but these are the first to be installed on town streets.

They are a gift from the UNC student body to improve safety for students off campus and to honor Carson, who was kidnapped and murdered in 2008.
