Train hits car in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE The accident happened around 9:30pm Friday night on Moore Street.

Rescue officials say five people were originally in the SUV, which was dragged about 360 feet down the tracks.

Police say a 15-year-old girl was inside the car when the train made impact, but she only suffered minor injuries. Her mother, who tried to get her out of the car, was knocked down by the impact and broke some ribs. Both were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

A section of Moore Street was closed to street repairs at the time of the collision, and some of the asphalt had been removed on both sides of the tracks. Eyewitnesses say the driver apparently tried to beat the train before the crossing arms came down. But, the SUV got stuck, right before the train came into the area.

Nobody on the train was hurt.
