The spokesman said Stockstill notified ECU of his decision Tuesday morning.
The ECU was left vacant when Skip Holtz was hired as South Florida's new coach last week.
Stockstill had been the leading candidate at ECU since interviewing there on Sunday. He was East Carolina's offensive coordinator in 2003.
