Police searching for Durham bank robber

DURHAM It happened at the Sun Trust Bank on University Drive in Durham at 12:30 p.m.

Police say a suspect entered the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money. The suspect did not appear to have a weapon.

Durham police say the suspect is 41-year-old Willie Daniel.

Durham police are trying to locate Daniel, who has been charged with one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The amount of money stolen from the bank has not been disclosed.

Eyewitnesses told police that the suspect fled the scene in a dark blue Jeep Grand Cherokee occupied by a man and woman.

An investigator spotted the Jeep at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of South Roxboro Street a short time later and officers surrounded an apartment where the suspect was believed to be hiding.

After several minutes, the occupants of the apartment came outside, but the suspect was not in the apartment. Investigators questioned several people but no one else has been charged in the case.
