Mother, child killed in apartment fire

SELMA

Authorities received an emergency call just after 4 a.m. about a fire inside a unit at the Red Wood Village Apartments on Oriole Court.

When the Selma Fire Department arrived at the scene, crews saw fire and smoke coming from a second floor window. Crews began to put the fire and searched the unit.

Authorities found 14-month-old Isaiah King in a rear bedroom. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His mother, 22-year-old Jennifer Walker, was found in the hallway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire officials say of the nine units in the complex, the victims' unit was the only one damaged by fire. Some of the other units had smoke and water damage totaling about $40,000 in structural damage. The Red Cross relocated three families to hotels.

The Red Cross assisted three families whose apartments were damaged.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by "improperly discarded smoking materials" on a couch in the living room.
