Authorities release details in Duke Hospital shooting

DURHAM

Aaron Lorenzo Dorsey, 25, of Durham, died after being shot outside Duke Hospital.

Authorities say Dorsey was fatally shot by Duke Police after he tried to grab an officer's handgun.

It happened shortly after 1 a.m. at the main entrance of Duke North.

Police Chief John Dailey says two officers were involved in the incident. He identified the officers as Larry Carter, who has been employed by Duke Police for 23 years, and Jeffrey Liberto, who has been employed for two years.

According to officials, Dorsey attacked an officer and tried to grab the gun from one of them.

It is not known which officer was attacked or which one fired the shot that killed Dorsey.

The two officers involved are now on paid leave.

Officials say the incident has the university taking a closer look at its policies and procedures making sure protocol was followed and innocent bystanders were never in harm's way.
