Former band director charged with sex offenses

JOHNSTON COUNTY

Investigators say they learned about the accusations on February 5, 2010. Mitchell "Lance" Britt, 38, is accused of sexual misconduct with students. He resigned from his position in November 2009.

Authorities say he began applying for jobs within other school systems out of state before leaving NC.

Pennsylvania authorities arrested Britt during a traffic stop Tuesday in Bethlehem, Pa., where he lives.

The investigation revealed that inappropriate sexual activity allegedly occurred with students both on campus and at his residence in Four Oaks, NC. The Johnston County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Raleigh office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation because of allegations that some incidents occurred outside Johnston County and possibly in other states during school band events.

According to warrants, Britt faces five counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and four counts of sex offense with students. Warrants containing those charges will be served when he is extradited to Johnston County.

Pennsylvania authorities also charged Britt with one count of each offense.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing. They did not say when Britt will be extradited.
