Skeletal remains found in Edgecombe County

ROCKY MOUNT Officials say they received a tip at around 1 p.m. Saturday, regarding the remains.

Individuals on four-wheelers said they located the remains about 20 yards inside the woods.

The remains were found in an area where several other bodies have been found.

Police are still investigating to determine if the most recent remains are part of a rash of murders in the area. Six women have been found dead so far, all of the murders involve women of similar description and background.

Each woman was black, had a history of drug use or prostitution, and was reported missing.

The bodies of Taraha Nicholson, Jarneice Hargrove, Jackie Thorpe, Melody Wiggins and Ernestine battle were all found nearby in Edgecombe County.

Christine Boone was found recently in Scotland neck at the former home of Antwon Pittman.

Pittman has been charged with murdering one of the women but a search warrant says there is now probable cause to believe Pittman is responsible for killing possibly five women altogether.

Two women are still missing.

After this new discovery, Edgecombe County sheriff James L. Knight says the families of missing people in Rocky Mount are being notified.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office at 252-641-7911 or Rocky Mount Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111.
