Two big rigs collide on interstate

ORANGE COUNTY Orange County dispatch tells ABC11 Eyewitness News that at least two vehicles were involved in the crash just west of US 15-501.

Moments after the two big rigs collided; the UPS truck went up in flames.

"My wife and I heard a big blast, we live less than a quarter of a mile away," eyewitness Steve Herman said. "We came to take a look at what happened. We saw the flames as we drove up here; they came right across the bridge.

Officials have not said what caused the accident, but there were multiple injuries. One person was taken to Duke Hospital by ambulance.

Further details about the crash has not been released at this time. The NC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Traffic was backed up for miles as authorities closed the westbound lanes and reduced the eastbound lanes so they could clear the scene.
