In 2005, Kenneth Maready hit and killed 61-year-old Kay Stokes while trying to drive away from a traffic stop in Durham County. Stokes' 6-year-old granddaughter was injured.
A judge sentenced Maready to at least 50 years in prison, but the state appeals court has ruled he had ineffective counsel and may not have understood the defense strategy.
