New superintendent for Edgecombe Co. schools

TARBORO, N.C. Following a meeting held at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Tarboro, the Board voted to select Dr. Wayne M. Talley as successor to the position currently held by interim superintendent Dr. Stephen Mazingo and formerly held by Dr. Craig Witherspoon.

Talley is serving as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction of Avery County Schools and lives in Newland. He earned the doctorate in education from Nova Southeastern University in Florida and has a N.C. Superintendent Certificate.

Dr. Talley's career includes work as a teacher, football coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal. He has published a book on character education and its effect on student performance and behavior, which he distributed to board members at the meeting. He is also a member of both the N.C. Association of School Administrators and the Principal-Assistant Principal Association.

District officials anticipate that Talley will take the helm in August or September of this year.
